Yerevan is located in the Ararat Plain, from where you can see the legendary mountain within reach on clear days, and today has over 1.2 million inhabitants. Throughout history, the city, which is located on the Hrasdan River, has always benefited from its favorable position on the trade routes between India and Europe. After a long period of Persian rule, Yerevan came to the sphere of power of tsarist Russia in 1827. More and more Armenians from the surrounding countries (e.g. Refugees and survivors of the genocide of 1915) settled here over the years, so that the city grew steadily. Individual districts were named after the old hometowns of the displaced persons of the Ottoman Empire. The influx also stopped when Yerevan became the capital of the Armenian SSR after the short independence of Armenia (1918-1920). Towards the end of the Soviet era and at the time of Gorbachev’s Glasnost and perestroika, the city played a decisive role in the Armenian national-democratic movement. At the beginning of 1988, almost a million inhabitants gathered in the central square of the Republic (then still Lenin Square) to demonstrate for democracy, environmental protection and independence, as well as against corruption. Three and a half years later, in September 1991, Yerevan finally became the capital of independent Armenia again.
