The coastal city of Xiamen attracts year-round with a pleasant climate, palm-lined waterfront promenades and the proximity to the impressive Tulou clay circular buildings of the Hakka. The port city, located in the southeastern province of Fujian, has also been awarded several times as the cleanest city in China due to its particularly good air.
Already in the 16th century Europeans used Xiamen as a trading port and in the middle of the 19th century Xiamen even became the most important export port for tea. One of the most valuable Chinese teas comes from the nearby Wuyi Mountains. Colonial architecture from this period still shapes the cityscape today and makes Xiamen look amazingly European in some places. This is especially true for the small island of Gulangyu. Once Americans and Europeans built their villas here, Japanese and rich Chinese did the same to them. The car-free island is an idyllic gem with beautiful parks and inviting beaches. Just three hours away by bus, the famous round buildings of the Hakka can be discovered in Yongding County. The impressive clay castles were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2008. The Tulou are three to five-storey residential castles that can accommodate up to 1,000 people and offer protection from enemies as well as from the forces of nature.
