The metropolis of Wrocław has around 640,000 inhabitants and is the fourth largest city in Poland. The capital of the Dolny Śląsk Voivodeship (Lower Silesia) was recently named the Cultural City of the Year 2016. But today Wroclaw is already one of the most important cultural centers in the country.

“The flower of Europe” was once called Wroclaw. Today’s Wrocław is blooming more beautifully than ever. The city on the Oder River is more than 1,000 years old and yet it has remained young and vital. More than 100,000 students shape the cityscape, and the leisure facilities are correspondingly large. There are a few hundred pubs, clubs and restaurants around the historic market square alone.

The 215 m by 175 m Rynek is the second largest marketplace in Poland and one of the most beautiful. Its focal point is the Gothic town hall, which is one of the most important medieval buildings in Europe. Construction began at the end of the 13th century, and about 250 years later it had found its shape, which has been preserved to this day. The representative rooms are used for art exhibitions, but the cellar with its labyrinth-like rooms still fulfils the same function as 700 years ago: as the largest taproom in the city. “Whoever was not in the Schweidnitzer Keller was not in Breslau, ” it used to be said, and many famous guests such as Goethe and Chopin were guided by it. The market square is lined with magnificent town houses in the Baroque, Renaissance and Art Nouveau styles.
