Windhoek is the capital of Namibia and today has between 300,000 and 400,000 (different data) inhabitants. Windhoek is the political, cultural, industrial and economic center of Namibia.

Which country is Windhoek?
Windhoek is located in a basin at an altitude of 1,600 meters. The city is surrounded by the Aus Mountains (2,479 meters) to the southeast and the Grand Duke Mountain to the south (2,339 meters). The pleasant highland climate with 300 sunny days and 260 millimetres of precipitation a year – as well as the colourful hustle and bustle of the city are a great way to get in tune with Namibia.
The name Windhoek comes from Afrikaans and means “wind blanket” or “windy corner”. The former spelling Windhoek at the beginning of the German colonial period is no longer common today.
The San (bushmen) settled the area around Windhoek for thousands of years. Since hot springs emerged in the region around Windhoek, the area was settled around 1850 by the Orlam (collective term for the connections of Dutch Boers and Nama women that arose in the Cape colony in the 17th /18th century).
The Boers, Dutch settlers from the Cape colony (South Africa), later built a stone church here for up to 500 people, which was also used as a school. Thus, a city soon developed, but it was completely destroyed due to military conflicts between the Nama and Herero, so that in 1873 there was nothing left of the emerging city.
In 1884, German South-West Africa was declared a so-called German Protected Area. Although the English had annexed the bay of Walfis Bay on the coast in 1878 and assigned this area to the Cape colony, they were not at all interested in the hinterland, so that the German colonial power had a free hand here.
