The Western Sahara is a country on the Atlantic Ocean in the west of Africa. The country has a total area of 266,000 km2 and a total coastal length of 1,110 km. This land mass corresponds to approximately 74% of the size of Germany. This makes Western Sahara the 29th smallest country in Africa and 77th in the world. With 2.5 inhabitants per km2, it is also the least populated country in Africa.


The Western Sahara is comparatively low at an average altitude of 256 meters above sea level. The highest elevation in the country (Aousserd) is at an altitude of 701 meters. There are direct national borders with the 3 neighboring countries Algeria, Mauritania and Morocco. The distance between Berlin and the capital El Aaiún is approximately 3,580 km.
