The origin of the name can not be clarified exactly. Either it comes from a Wanto who founded a village on the creek (Bek) or the river served as a territorial border, since the old name Wantesbeke is called as much as Grenzbach. The place was first mentioned in writing in 1296, but it did not fall to Hamburg until 1938 by the Greater Hamburg Act.

The center of the district is the Wandsbeker Markt, where the district office – in the Stormarnhaus designed by Fritz Höger in 1923 –, the bus station and the subway station Wandsbek Markt are located. In addition, here are the Quarree shopping center and Wandsbeker Marktstraße, in which the second oldest department store in Germany is located, today Karstadt Wandsbek.

Worth seeing are the Christuskirche, built only in 1953, and its directly adjacent cemetery, where Matthias Claudius is buried, but also the Schimmelmann Mausoleum, which is considered an important neoclassical building.
