When I looked out of the window during the landing approach to Virginia Beach, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge tunnel caught my eye first of all. With a total length of 37 km, the famous access gate to the city is the longest bridge-tunnel complex in the world. Opened in 1964, the facility connects the Delmarva Peninsula with the mainland of Virginia and Virginia Beach and is considered one of the “seven technical masterpieces of the modern world”.
