Vadodara in the past known as Baroda, the cultural capital of Gujarat, is the third largest city in the western Indian state of Gujarat, after Ahmedabad and Surat. It is the regulatory home office of Vadodara district and is situated right on the bank of Vishwamitri Creek, southeast of Ahmedabad, 139 kilometers from the state capital Gandhinagar. After fierce battles, Vadodara was captured by the Solanki dynasty. Years later, the city was captured by the Mughals, who were later overthrown by the ruler Gaekwad.
Vadodara owes much of its splendor to Sayajirao Gaekwad III, a formal ruler of the city. He was a great modernizer who laid the foundation for Vadodara’s modern reputation as the cultural capital of Gujarat.
