Great Britain is located in Western Europe. Officially, the country is called the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, in English: United Kingdom, abbreviated therefore also UK. The United Kingdom includes England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Which country is the United Kingdom in?
England, Wales and Scotland are located on a large island, surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the North Sea and the English Channel. The English Channel is an arm of the Atlantic Ocean that separates England from France. Northern Ireland forms a second island with the Republic of Ireland to the west of it. Both islands (plus other smaller ones) are the “British Isles”.
“Great Britain” actually refers only to the largest of the British Isles, but the name is also common for the entire country. The name England is also common, although England is actually only a part of the country, but just the largest part. The inhabitants are called British. Depending on where you live, you are also English, Scottish, Welsh or Northern Irish.
Great Britain is a country located in the north-west of Europe. More precisely, the state is called “United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland”. The state consists of the parts of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. England, Scotland and Wales are located on the actual island of “Great Britain”, which is the largest of the British Isles. Northern Ireland is a small part of the opposite island of Ireland. The country has about a quarter less inhabitants than Germany and is also about a third smaller.
The UK still has some islands nearby. Britain also has a number of colonies around the world. These islands are now called “overseas territories”. These territories date back to the time when there was a British empire.
Around the year 1900, the British Empire was the largest and most powerful country in the world. By 1960, most of the colonies had been lost again. But still many people in the world are learning the English language . Many people have also adopted some of the culture from Great Britain.
The “United Kingdom” has been a member of the EU since the founding of the European Union (EU) in 1993. Twenty years earlier, it had already been accepted into the European Community. The British did not want to introduce the European money, the euro. They preferred to stay with the British pound. In 2016, a narrow majority of Britons voted in a referendum for “Brexit”, the country’s exit from the EU. There has never been anything like this before. On January 31, 2020, the United Kingdom left the EU after long negotiations on the new cooperation.
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is located in the north-west of Europe between the North Sea, the Atlantic Ocean, the Irish Sea and the English Channel. The island state comprises the main island of Great Britain, on which the capital London is also located, and the semi-autonomous parts of England, Scotland and Wales. Northern Ireland occupies the northeast of the island of Ireland and borders the Republic of Ireland.
The United Kingdom includes several islands and island groups: the islands of Wight in the south and Anglesey off Wales in the Irish Sea, the Isles of Scilly in the southwest, the Hebrides in the northwest, the Orkney and Shetland Islands in the north, the Channel Islands of Guernsey and Jersey off the French Channel coast, and the northeastern part of the island of Ireland.
