Ukraine is located in the east of Europe. The country borders on Poland, Belarus, Russia, Moldova, Romania, Hungary and Slovakia. To the south is the Black Sea, which is connected to the Sea of Azov by the Kerch Strait.

In the Black Sea is the Crimean peninsula. It has been claimed and controlled by Russia since 2014. Ukraine continues to consider Crimea as part of its national territory.
Ukraine is the largest country in Europe, the borders of which are located entirely on the continent (Russia is larger, but with its larger part is in Asia). According to residents, Ukraine is in 7th place. The name Ukraine is probably derived from an Old Russian word meaning border area.
Ukraine is located in the East European Plain. This flat landscape occupies the entire east of Europe and, in turn, is divided into lowlands and mountain ranges, which, however, have only heights up to about 500 meters.
In the center of Ukraine is the Dnieper lowland, located on both sides of the Dnieper River. To the east is the Donezplatte, a mountain range whose highest elevation measures 369 meters. To the west lies the Podolian Plate, another mountain range. At the very south-west, the mountains are significantly higher, because here the Carpathians run through Ukraine. The highest mountain in Ukraine, the Howerla, is also located in the Carpathians. Its peak measures 2061 meters.
