Where is Turkmenistan Located

Turkmenistan is located in Central Asia. It borders on the countries of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan and Iran. The west is located on the Caspian Sea with a shore length of 1768 kilometers. By the way, this is not a sea at all, but a lake. It is the largest lake on Earth and contains salt water. In the north-west of Turkmenistan, the Caspian Sea has a lagoon. Two narrow headlands separate this Karabugas Gulf from the Caspian Sea. Significant salt deposits are stored here.

Turkmenistan is 90 percent covered by desert! This desert is called Karakum. It is very dry and consists sometimes of sand, sometimes of rubble. In the middle of the desert, a canal was built from 1954 to irrigate fields. It runs from east to west for 1445 kilometers. It starts from the town of Atamyrat on the Amudarya River. However, water is extracted from the river and this has contributed to the Aral Sea drying up (see Uzbekistan land).

Turkmenistan also has mountains. Thus, the Great Balkan runs in the west at an altitude of up to 1880 meters. Further south, the foothills of the Kopet-Dag Mountains, which are mainly located in Iran, extend into Turkmenistan. Further east it is the Gissar Mountains, whose foothills stretch over from Afghanistan. In the very east, on the border with Uzbekistan, lies the Köýtendag Mountains. It contains the highest mountain in the country, the Aýrybaba with a height of 3139 meters.
