The city of Tunis is the capital of the Republic of Tunisia and has about 2, 400. 000 Inhabitants. Tunis is also the capital of the governorate of the same name and is located in the northeast of the country on the Gulf of Tunis. Between the city proper and the Gulf of Tunis (Mediterranean Sea) there is a shallow lagoon, which is called the “Lake of Tunis – Lac de Tunis”. The actual core of the city is located about 10 kilometers from the sea and consists of the New Town (Ville Nouvelle), created by the French during the colonial era, and the old, historic district – the Medina of Tunis. Around the area of the old town are the more modern districts of the city.

To the west is the villa and government district of Le Bardo with the building of the museum of the same name, which served as their palace in the time of the Beys. Part of the palace now houses the Tunisian Parliament. In the north of the city is the district around the Belvédère Hills – a destination for Tunisian city dwellers. Here, in the wooded Belvédère Park above the city, there is a gazebo built in the Arabic style and a zoo. During the protectorate period, this site belonged to the municipal casino of Tunis, whose colonial-style construction was built on the highest point of the hill. The entire area was fenced and not everyone had access here.
