Which country is Tirana located?
The capital of Albania, Tirana, is the political, economic and cultural center of the country. The city is located on the western shore of the local mountain Dajti (1,611 m) in central Albania. A cable car ride up the mountain is possible. Tirana, founded in 1614, was declared the capital only in 1920. The center of the city is Skanderbeg Square. Among other things, it is surrounded by many public buildings, the National Historical Museum, the Opera, which is located in the Palace of Culture, and the Et’hem Bey Mosque. From here the roads continue in a star shape. The landmark of the city is also located here: the Skanderbeg monument, dedicated to the Albanian national hero Skanderbeg. Tirana is usually the starting point for Albania tours, as the international airport is also located here. From the city center it is about 17 kilometers. The airport is called “Mother Theresa”.
Due to its central location, Tirana was designated the capital of Albania in 1920. The city is known for the various colorful buildings from the Ottoman, fascist and Soviet times. The huge central main square is named after the Albanian national hero Skanderberg. There are many important and worth seeing buildings here. Such as the Modernist National Historical Museum and the Et’hem Bey Mosque. In the immediate vicinity of Tirana is the Syri i Kaltër and the Llogara National Park. Although Tirana was already important in Roman times, it only experienced its economic boom in the 21st century.
Tirana is the capital and largest city of Albania. About 418,000 people live in the city and about 557,000 in the metropolitan area. The city is home to many public institutions, as well as private and public universities (public university since 1957). Tirana is the center of the political, economic and cultural life of the country. The only international airport in the country is located near the city. Tirana was an industrial center during the communist rule. Today, most of the inhabitants work in trade, commerce, as government employees, in the construction sector and in the service sector.
During our exciting tour through Albania we also made a stop in the capital Tirana. After several days in the car, always on the road, it was time for some city life. And so we rented a really great accommodation in the city center and explored Albania’s capital on our own.
