What country is Tbilisi in?
The capital of Georgia Tbilisi, located in the eastern part of the country on the Kura River, is usually always the starting point of all Georgia tours. It is the largest city in the country and cultural and economic center. The international airport is also located here, which is located about 20 kilometers from the city center. You have a good overview of the city from the Mtatsminda Park. The climate in Tbilisi is temperate. In summer, up to 30 C can be reached, in winter the temperatures can drop to – 2 C. Translated, the name Tbilisi means “warm spring”. This is due to the hot sulfur springs, which are located not far away. Tbilisi has been twinning with Saarbrücken since 1975. You can easily explore the Old Town of Tbilisi on foot, as all the interesting architectural monuments of the Old Town are located close to each other.

With more than one million inhabitants, Tbilisi is now the largest city in Georgia and at the same time the capital of the country. Historically, there were probably two reasons for the founding of a city in this place. On the one hand, the warm springs that spring up in the surrounding mountains made the location attractive. These have been used in spas for centuries. On the other hand, Tbilisi was located at the intersection of two historical caravan routes. Over the course of history, the city then changed its nationality several times. So Tbilisi repeatedly served as the capital of Georgia, but was also part of the Ottoman Empire and the Soviet Union. These different cultural influences can still be observed in the city today. As by far the largest city in the country, Tbilisi is also the cultural and sporting center of Georgia.
Tbilisi is located on the Kura River and is surrounded by mountains on three sides. These also have an impact on urban development. Because on the right side of the river, the mountains protrude comparatively far into the urban area. Therefore, most of the densely populated areas are located on the left side of the river. There are also considerable differences in altitude within the city: the lowest point is 380 meters above sea level, the highest point of the city is then already at 727 meters. This height difference is often overcome by neighbourhoods that have been built into the mountain like a terrace. Geographically, Tbilisi is located in the southern Caucasus, in the east of Georgia. However, the weather is moderate and quite comparable to Central Europe. The average annual temperature is around 13 degrees Celsius, with temperatures exceeding 30 degrees in summer and falling below zero in winter. In principle, however, Tbilisi benefits from the fact that the mighty Caucasus Mountains keep the cold air out of Russia and thus ensure generally pleasant temperatures.
