Sunderland is a city in Tyne And Wear in the north-east of England, the city forms the City of Sunderland metropolitan borough with other places in the surrounding area.

Sunderland stretches roughly parallel to the North Sea coast, the city is more or less divided into two by the River Wear, which forms the so-called Hylton Gorge here. Across the river, the northern and southern halves of the city are mainly connected by two bridges, the Queen Alexandra Bridge and the Wearmouth Bridge. To the west is the remarkable Hylton Viaduct with the A19.

Today’s Sunderland was formed from the three settlements of Monkwearmouth, Bishopwearmouth and Sunderland. The names of the first two places indicate the location at the mouth of the Wear River. At the end of the 12th century, Sunderland received the charter of a borough, in 1832 it became a Parliamentary Borough and in 1888 the city received the status of a county borough. The County Borough Of Sunderland later became u.a. around the towns of Ryhope, Silksworth, Tunstall, East& Middle Herrington, South Hylton, Castletown and Whitburn South Bends, Offerton (tlw.), Washington, Hetton-Le-Hole and Houghton-Le-Spring.In 1992, Sunderland received the status of the City Of Sunderland, most recently Sunderland was ranked 13th among the largest cities in England.
