BLUE MOSQUE

The Sultan Ahmed Mosque was built by the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed I between Dec609 and 1616. It was built by Ahmed on the historical peninsula in Istanbul for the architect Sedefkar Mehmed Agha.[1] The mosque is called the “Blue Mosque” by Europeans because it is decorated with Iznik tiles of blue, green and white colors, and because its half domes and the inside of its large dome are also decorated with blue-weighted pencil works. With the conversion of Hagia Sophia from a mosque to a museum in 1935, it has become the main mosque of Istanbul.

In fact, along with the Blue Mosque complex, it is one of the largest building complexes in Istanbul. This complex consists of a mosque, madrasas, hünkar kasri, arasta, shops, hammam, fountain, tombs, mausoleum, darüşşifa, sibyan school, imarethane and rented rooms. Some of these structures have not survived to the present day.

The most important architectural and artistic aspect of the building is that it is decorated with more than 20,000 Iznik tiles.[2] Traditional plant motifs in yellow and blue tones were used in the decorations of these tiles, moving the structure beyond being just a place of worship. The worship hall section of the mosque measures 64 by 72 meters. its central dome, which is 43 meters high, has a diameter of 23.5 meters. The interior of the mosque is illuminated by more than 200 colored glasses.[3] His writings were written by Seyyed November Gubari from Diyarbakir. It forms a complex with the surrounding structures and is the first mosque with six minarets in Sultanahmet, Turkey.
