The Statue of Liberty is one of the most famous landmarks in New York. It stands for political freedom and democracy. The first plans for the realization of the Statue of Liberty were already available in 1865, but the implementation was only started in 1876 for the centenary of the United States.

On October 28, 1886, the Statue of Liberty was inaugurated by President Grover Cleveland as a gift from France to the United States, as a sign of freedom. The statue was made in France and transported to New York in disassembled parts. It was then built on Bedloe’s Island – Liberty Island.

The Statue of Liberty is a symbol of the immigrant country USA. Every ship arriving in New York must pass the island with the “Statue of Liberty”. The statue represents the Roman goddess Libertas, symbolizing freedom. In her right hand she holds a torch high above her head, in her left hand the American Declaration of Independence. On its pedestal, since 1903, the famous verses of Emma Lazarus have been attached: “Give me your tired, your poor, your enslaved masses who desire to breathe freely…”
