Skopje is the capital of the South-Eastern European Republic of Macedonia, founded in 1991, which was initially regarded as the “Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia” by the United Nations and other international institutions as well as, among others, by the German federal government until the settlement of disagreements with Greece, but can now be officially referred to as the Republic of North Macedonia. The country is bordered by Serbia and Kosovo to the north, Bulgaria to the east, Albania to the west and Greece to the south. Skopje is located in the north-west of the country in a basin through which the Vardar River flows.
