Hokkaido has only been a part of Japan since the mid-19th century, after Japanese settlers came to the island. Before that time, only the Proto-Japanese Ainu lived here. After the settlement by the Japanese, Sapporo was planned in a checkerboard pattern similar to many American cities. Since 1886 Sapporo has been the capital of Hokkaido Prefecture and already in 1970 the number of inhabitants cracked the million mark.
Since the 11th Olympic Games were held in Sapporo (1972), the city has been twinning with Munich.
