Santa Cruz de Tenerife is, since 1833, the capital of the island, and shares the capital of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands with Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. It is located in the northeast of the island, where it borders with San Cristóbal de La Laguna and El Rosario, and covers 150.56 km2. Its highest point is Cruz de Taborno, at 1020 meters above sea level, and it has 58 kilometers of coastline naturally divided by the Santos ravine. It forms, together with the city of La Laguna, the metropolitan area. Its port is key in maritime communications between Europe, Africa and America, but also to the eastern Canary Islands, and receives both commercial ships and tourist cruises.


Santa Cruz is a cheerful and bright city. However, its best known festival is undoubtedly the Carnival, declared a Festival of International Tourist Interest. Its streets invite you to enjoy the outdoors, walks and parks, since it has an average annual temperature of 21.2 ºC. In the city center there are numerous pedestrian streets with a lot of atmosphere, where shopping to find products from all over the world is a pleasure. The most important historical buildings coexist with great contemporary architectural works. It also has several museums and art galleries, although its largest permanent exhibition is located outdoors: In some of its avenues and parks there are works by Henry Moore, Martín Chirino, Joan Miró and Óscar Domínguez, among other artists. Its most popular bathing areas, somewhat away from the city center, are the secluded beaches of Taganana and Benijos, but also the Playa de las Teresitas, adorned by palm trees and located next to the fishing neighborhood of San Andrés. The César Manrique Maritime Park, on the other hand, is a swimming pool complex located in the new expansion area of the city.
