Where is Puerto Rico located exactly?

San Juan is the capital of the American island state of Puerto Rico and is located in the northeast of the island. With its 418,140 inhabitants, the city is the largest on the island. However, not only the number of inhabitants in the central city (and the 1,988,632 as an agglomeration) make San Juan what it is, also on the economic, cultural and tourist level, the capital of Puerto Rico is the center of the island. In terms of transport, the city of San Juan has an international airport (Aeropuerto Internacional Luis Munoz Marin), as well as a metro line that has been running from Bayamon to Sagrado Corazon since 2005.

The reason for the inclusion in the World Cultural Heritage are the impressive fortifications that were once built by the Spanish colonial rulers. A total of four fortifications secured the city against attacks from land and sea. La Fortaleza (or Palacio de Santa Catalina – since 1822 the seat of the Governor of Puerto Rico), Fort San Felipe del Morro, Fort San Juan de la Cruz Fort San Cristóbal. San Juan was therefore considered impregnable for centuries and was a strategically important trading and military base of the Spaniards. Before the city then fell to the United States in 1898 in the course of the American-Spanish War.
