It is a place proud of its past and with a future full of promise that bears the name of a soldier of the American Revolutionary War. Since its founding in 1834, Rochester has been the place where new ideas are forged. From its beginning, the famous Erie Canal fostered its rapid population and commercial growth, making Rochester the first city to experience explosive growth in America. Eastman Kodak, Xerox, Bausch & Lomb, and other international companies started here, and new companies continue to provide products and services that are used all over the world.

The area has 18 universities and colleges of higher studies attended by more than 80,000 students. Among them are the University of Rochester, one of the most important private universities in the country, and the Rochester Institute of Technology, a technological college with a worldwide reputation for providing education to deaf and hard of hearing students in the field of technology and commerce.

Universities and companies often work together, forming partnerships that have helped Rochester develop as a leader in numerous industries.

The man who invented the cinematographic films and who is considered the father of Moderna photography, lived in this city. In fact, Rochester is a famous place today because George Eastman, the founder of the Kodak company, donated most of his fortune to make this city a world-renowned center of art and culture, with theaters and a philharmonic orchestra that performs more than 140 concerts per year. The mansion where Eastman lived is connected to the George Eastman Museum, the international museum of photography and cinema.

Fans of the theatrical production The Lion King will find with interest that the choreographer of it, Garth Fagan, lives and runs his own dance company in Rochester.

Our museums include the National Toy Hall of Fame, the gallery of famous games, at the Strong National Museum of Play, and we have a collection of thousands of years of art and some important historical sites. Rochester led the worldwide civil rights movement, which included the fight for the right to vote for women, and was one of the stations of the underground railroad, the secret network of hidden places that helped runaway slaves achieve their freedom.

The region is part of the Great Lakes Waterway, one of the nation’s longest scenic byways along the Great Lakes, and is within walking distance of numerous natural points of interest. The Finger Lakes area, with its beautiful chain of lakes and over 100 wineries, has one of the largest vineyard collections in the country. Very close to Rochester is the Letchworth State Park, known as the “Grand Canyon of the East”. Although in the past it was only used for its commercial value, today the Erie Canal has been transformed into a place of aquatic recreation lined with trails and picturesque villages.
