The city of Pune is located in the west of the state of Maharashtra, on the edge of the Deccan Plateau. Pune is both an industrial city and the cultural center of Maharashtra. With its almost 3.12 million inhabitants, the fast-growing city, which is also known as the “Queen of the Deccan”, brings busy life to the otherwise lonely expanse of the Deccan Plateau.


The city was founded in the 16th century. famous as the capital of the mighty Maratha Empire and also in the 19th century, when the British made Pune their second seat next to Bombay (today Mumbai) to escape the summer heat and the recurring floods, Pune gained in importance again.
Today, Pune’s software industry is booming, as are other sectors such as energy, outsourcing and the automotive industry. With numerous well-known branches in Pune, they make the city an important Indian economic center. In addition, Pune is known as a center for higher education. The film school located there is particularly popular.
However, Pune can also boast of numerous cultural and historical sights. Especially worth seeing is the old district of Pesha in the west. In this area, wooden palatial townhouses (wadas) have been preserved in the narrow busy streets, which give an idea of Pune from bygone times.
The business city of Pune is located on a plateau about 170 km southeast of Mumbai.
Due to the much more favorable climate – compared to the always-sultry Mumbai – it served as the “monsoon capital” for the British colonial rulers, then still called Poona. The ideal travel time is from October to April.
In the old Town there are the ruins of the Shaniwar Wada Palace, which was built in 1736 and burned to the ground in 1817. The Vishram Bagh Wada Palace is not far away – it now houses several municipal authorities and a post office.
