Puerto Rico is an island in the Caribbean Sea. Along with a few smaller islands nearby, Puerto Rico is an outlying territory of the United States of America. About three million people live there. The capital is called San Juan. This is pronounced like “San Chuan”.
The name of the island is Spanish and means “Rich port” in German. Puerto Rico does not speak English, but Spanish. This has to do with the fact that Puerto Rico used to belong to the Spanish Colonial Empire. Only in 1898 Puerto Rica was conquered by the Americans in a war. Over the course of the 20th century, many Puerto Ricans emigrated to the United States. Today, there are more Puerto Ricans living in the United States than in Puerto Rico itself.
Puerto Rico is located in the tropics. So it’s summer all year round. About two thirds of the island consists of mountains. However, the highest mountain, the Cerro de Punta, is only 1,338 meters high. The mountains are covered by rainforest. There are also many sandy beaches with palm trees and small deserts in Puerto Rico.
