What country is Pretoria?

Pretoria, also called Tshwane since 2005, is the capital of the country. Pretoria is located in the north in the province of Gauteng, about 50 kilometers from Johannesburg The city with about 1 million inhabitants has been generously laid out with numerous parks and wide streets. Pretoria, South Africa’s capital, is located about fifty kilometers north of Johannesburg and is part of the Gauteng province. The city is named after the voortrekker and national hero Andries Pretorius. In the new South Africa – as in many cities of the country – an African name – Tshwane – was chosen as the city name, whereby after protracted disputes it was agreed to keep the name Pretoria for the city center.

Almost a million people live in the city. Another million live in the surrounding metropolitan Area. The population consists to a large extent of officials who are in the service of the government.
