In which country is Portugal located?
Portugal, along with Spain, is located on the Iberian Peninsula. It is separated from the rest of Europe by the Pyrenees Mountains in the southwest of the continent. Portugal occupies only 15 percent in the west of the Iberian Peninsula, while 85 percent belongs to Spain.
Spain is also the only country with which Portugal has land borders. To the west and south, Portugal is located on the Atlantic Ocean.
Portugal includes the island of Madeira, which is located about 700 kilometers west of Morocco, and the Azores, a group of islands more than 1300 kilometers west of Portugal. The Azores are also home to the highest mountain in Portugal, the Ponta do Pico with an altitude of 2351 meters.
Portugal has a long Atlantic coast. It is shallow and sandy. To the south is the Algarve, a popular holiday region with pretty sandy beaches and cliffs. Several rivers flow through the country, which, coming from Spain, flow into the Atlantic Ocean. The largest are the Douro, the Tagus and the Guadiana.
There are also mountains in Portugal. These are located in the northeast of the country, while the coast and the south are flat or hilly. The Tagus River forms a natural border between the north and south of Portugal. One of the mountains is the Serra da Estrela, which with 1993 meters is the highest mountain of the mainland of Portugal, the Torre.
