Where is Port Louis Located

The capital of the state of Mauritius Port Louis is the cultural, economic and political center of the island. With an area of 6.3 square kilometers and “only” 170,000 inhabitants, it is a small capital, but it has nothing to do with the big capitals in terms of busyness.

Port Louis is the capital of Mauritius. The city was founded in 1735 by the French governor. With about 170,000 inhabitants, it is the largest city in the country and is the economic and cultural center of the island. The city is located on the west coast of Mauritius in a protected harbor. Worth seeing is the Aapravasi Gha, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the citadel-like fortress Fort Adelaide or the palm-lined Place D’Armes. Port Louis is best explored on foot. The legacy of the colonial era is presented next to modern buildings, boutiques next to traditional markets – there is even a Chinatown. However, you won’t find the charm of an old colonial city in Port Louis. Stamp enthusiasts will surely know the “Blue Mauritius”. A copy is in the Blue Penny Museum.
