Palembang is a city in Indonesia. It is located about 428 km northwest of the capital Jakarta. About 1,669,000 inhabitants live in Palembang. Palembang is located on the Musi River, the longest river in Sumatra. The Musi River divides the city into an economic – cultural center (Seberang Ilir) and the administrative center (Seberang Ulu).
There are countless houseboats on the Musi River, which are supplied by a floating market.


There are three ports. Ferries depart to the islands of Bantam and Bangka. River taxis, called keteks, take passengers to the berths up the river. In the catchment area of Palembang there are productive oil fields and larger rubber plantations.
The city lives on heavy industry and shipbuilding. The international airport is located 15 km northwest of the city center.
