Oberhausen is a city in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in western Germany. It has 210,000 inhabitants, making it one of the larger cities in Germany. It is located on the rivers Ruhr and Emscher, as well as on the Rhine-Herne Canal. The Ruhr and the Emscher flow into the Rhine a little to the west. Oberhausen is located in a very flat area. The highest point of the city is just under 100 meters above sea level. This is the Knappenhalde, a small hill. Oberhausen, together with several other nearby cities, forms the Ruhr area. Almost five million people live there. This is one of the most densely populated areas of Germany.
Oberhausen was founded around the year 1800 by the merger of several villages. Around the year 1850, coal began to be extracted from the ground in Oberhausen. They were needed to produce steel. These goods were transported by rail. Until the years after 1990, Oberhausen was an important city for German industry. Since then, most of the collieries and steel mills have been closed down, because it is hardly possible to earn more money with it. Today, the residents of the city are mainly engaged in services. This refers to companies such as banks, insurance companies or shops.
At night, the gasometer lights up. It is located directly on the banks of the Rhine-Herne Canal near a shopping center, the Centro.
The cityscape is modern, because many old buildings were destroyed during the Second World War. The landmark of Oberhausen is the gasometer. This is a 117-meter-high tower, where natural gas used to be stored. It was found during the mining of coal. Today you can enter the store. With a glass elevator you can get to the very top. From there you can look up to 35 kilometers. Sometimes concerts and theaters are also held in the Gasometer. Another well-known building is the Luise Albertz Hall opposite the town hall. Many events are held there throughout the year, for example, fairs. The Kaisergarten, on the other hand, is a small green oasis in the middle of the industrial city.
