Location: Novosibirsk is located east of the Ural Mountains in the Asian part of Russia and in the geographical center of the country. The distance Novosibirsk – Moscow is 3191 km. The city is located on the border between the forest-steppe and forest zones in the south of the West Siberian Lowland, on the Ob River, and at the intersection of the main transport routes between Europe and Asia.
Novosibirsk is located on both sides of the Ob River and, with a population of more than 1.5 million, is considered the third largest city in Russia and even the largest city in Siberia. Novosibirsk is the largest business, commercial,financial, scientific, industrial and cultural center in the Asian part of Russia. In addition, Novosibirsk is the largest transport hub of Western Siberia, which is located at the intersection of all transport routes, incl. the Trans-Siberian Railway.
The history of Novosibirsk, originally Novaya Derevnya (New Village), began in 1893 with the construction of a bridge of the Trans-Siberian Railway across the Ob River. in 1903, the settlement received city rights and was renamed Novonikolayevsk after the last tsar of Russia. Since 1926, at the request of the residents, the city has been called Novosibirsk (loosely translated as “New Siberia”). In Soviet times, the city developed mainly as an industrial center.
The main industrial sectors are the defense industry, aircraft construction (Chkalov Aircraft Plants), mechanical engineering (plant “Sibelektrotyashmash”), agricultural machinery construction (plant “Sibselmash”), metal industry (ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy), electrical engineering and electronics, IT industry, chemical and pharmaceutical industry, light and food industry, building materials.
