Where is Newport in the United Kingdom?

Newport – A traditional port city with a modern flair. Even in the Bronze Age, there was a fishing village in what is now Newport. Subsequently, the Celts, the Romans and the Normans also benefited from the favorable location of this village. It was also the Normans who built Newport Castle in the 11th century.

Unfortunately, the castle is now privately owned and can therefore only be viewed from the outside and from a distance, but it is also such a must-see and extremely attractive excursion destination.

The city stands out above all due to many extremely high-built bridges. This height is necessary, since Newport often experiences water level rises of up to 10 meters at high tide. The most bizarre bridge in Newport is probably the Transporter Bridge, which is only one of eight of its kind in the world. This floating ferry was built in 1902 to compensate for the lack of height of the banks. The gondola can carry up to six cars and 120 pedestrians.

Also worth seeing is the Newport Cathedral, which was probably partly built in the 9th century and later expanded again and again.

A new art center, the so-called Riverfront Theater and Arts Center, was recently created on the banks of the Usk River. There are always exciting events organized there. Also worth a visit is the Museum of Natural History and Archeology, which is one of the best in the country.
