The history of the city of Nashville
By American standards, Nashville can look back on a rather long history.
Paleoindians settled the area around Nashville as early as 13,000 BC. The first Europeans were French fur traders, who established the French Lick trading post here in 1717. In the 17th century, the Shawnee and later the Cherokee and the Chickasaw Indian tribes claimed the area.
Richard Henderson, a lawyer from North Carolina, acquired large areas of Central Tennessee and Kentucky from the Cherokee Indians in 1775. He dispatched a group to survey the Cumberland Valley area. At Christmas time in 1779, settlers crossed the frozen Cumberland River and, under the leadership of James Robertson, founded Fort Nashborough at this point. It was named after Francis Nash, a brigadier general of the Continental Army who died in the American Revolutionary War in 1777. A replica of the fort now stands in a park along the Cumberland River.
