Nanning is located in the south of the People’s Republic of China, about 160 km from the Sino-Vietnamese border. It is the capital of the Guangxi Autonomous Region and has about 6.37 million inhabitants.

The city, which is known today in particular as the political and cultural center of the region and – with petrochemistry, textile industry and metal processing as the main economic sectors – as an industrial city, can look back on a long history. The first mentions of today’s Nanning even date back to the year 318 AD. In 1324, during the Yuan Dynasty, the city then received its current name, which translates as “Southern Peace”. Economically and culturally, the city grew steadily. However, Nanning was under Japanese occupation both in 1940 and between 1944 and 1945. Nevertheless, the city quickly recovered, became the capital of the Guangxi Autonomous Region and experienced an economic boom since the 90s. There is a lively local trade, especially with Vietnam, which is reflected in the streetscape in the form of Vietnamese companies and traders. And also the culinary specialties of Nanning get a special touch due to the proximity to Vietnam and the resulting influences, which is famous throughout China.

Nearby, people have the opportunity to find the world-famous Guilin district. If you go to the north and west of Nanning, you will find the traditional villages of local residents at the same time. In Nanning, you should visit the Guangxi Museum, the Guangxi Medical Botanical Garden, the zoo, as well as a walk through the forest near the Liangfeng River. In addition, it would be interesting to walk through “Lake Phoenix” and Park Minsu. It is also worth visiting the ethnic relic centers of Guangxi, the ancient city of Yangmei and the hot springs of Jiuquwan.
