Which part of China is Nanjing located?

Nanjing is one of the oldest cities in China and has an important history. Already in 229 AD, the city was the capital of China for the first time. In the Ming Dynasty, the city experienced its heyday.

Before the first Ming emperor moved his seat to Beijing, Nanjing was expanded into the capital in the 14th century. The number of inhabitants at that time is estimated at 500,000. The old city wall, which is still very well preserved today, also dates from this time. Nanjing came to prosperity through trade and especially through the textile industry.

Nanjing, known as Jinling in ancient China, is the capital of Jiangsu Province and has been the capital of several empires in China in the past. It is located in the flat wide country in the low region on the Yangtze River. Nanjing means the “southern capital”. It has alternated with Beijing in the role of the capital in the great empires and modern governments. During the Ming Empire it was the largest city in China. Today, Nanjing has developed into a multi-track industry in the east of China, an important network of transport and communication has been established here.

Shipbuilding and printing also contributed to this. After the emperor moved his headquarters to the Forbidden City in Beijing in 1421, Nanjing received its current name, which translates as “southern capital”. After the abdication of the last Chinese emperor, Nanjing rose again to become the capital of China under the leadership of Sun Yat-sen.

During this time, the city experienced another heyday. Wealthy strata ensured an increase in the economy and consumption. After the Communists seized power, the capital was moved back to Beijing and Nanjing was given the status of a provincial capital, which still has the charm of a large, historically important capital.
