Münster is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is located in the Westphalian part of the country, some also consider it the Westphalian capital. About 300,000 people live in Münster. About 50,000 of them are students, because Münster has a large university.

In Latin, Münster is called “Monasterium”. The word means monastery. Therefore, churches that originally belonged to a monastery are also called a minster. After such churches, some cities or districts have been called Münster.

At first there was a settlement of the Teutons there, after all, Saint Liudger founded a monastery for monks. This was in the year 793 AD. Liudger came from Friesland and taught the people Christianity. He became the first bishop of Münster. Even today, the city is an important place for the Catholic Church.

Among other things, Münster became famous for the fact that an important treaty was signed there in 1648: the Peace of Westphalia. The treaties signed in Münster and Osnabrück ended the Thirty Years’ War. This is remembered in the old town hall of the city. For a long time it was the capital of the prince-Bishopric of Münster. This was a country whose head was the bishop.

Since 1815, Münster belonged to Prussia and became the capital of the province of Westphalia. During the Second World War, bombs destroyed almost the entire inner city of Münster. After that, the city center was mostly built as it looked before.

Münster is also considered a city of horses and bicycles. Tourists come not only because of the city center, but also because of the leisure activities on Lake Aasee: these include the Westphalian State Museum of Natural History with a planetarium and the all-weather zoo. Because of the Peace of Westphalia, Münster calls itself the “city of Peace”. There is still a peace hall in the historic town hall today. It is also known for the many churches.
