The city of Munich is located in Bavaria. Bavaria is a federal state in the southeast of the Federal Republic of Germany. Because the federal state of Bavaria, which calls itself the “Free State”, is governed and administered from Munich, Munich is also the capital of the federal state of Bavaria.

The city is located on the Isar River. This river originates in the Alps and flows into the Danube near Passau. Munich had exactly 1,488,202 inhabitants at the end of 2020. It is thus the third largest city in the Federal Republic of Germany after Berlin and Hamburg.

Munich was first mentioned in an old document from 1158. Today the city is divided into 25 urban districts. All together comprise 108 districts and 475 districts. The city districts are designated by numbers, but old names of places that were once independent places or districts that grew together to form the city of Munich have also been preserved.

Munich is located on the Isar River on one of the large gravel plains of the foothills of the Alps. The capital of Bavaria is the third largest city in Germany and is considered the “secret cultural capital”. With a population of 1.195 million, it is the third largest city in Germany. Munich is located at the exit of the Isar from its narrow valley into the Erdinger Moos on a mighty gravel plain, a relic of the Ice Ages.

The city is the seat of the state government, the state parliament and the seat of the Archbishop of Munich and Freising. The Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München was founded in Ingolstadt in 1472, moved to Landshut in 1800 and to Munich in 1826. Munich has other universities, including the Technical University, the Bundeswehr University of Applied Sciences, the University of Philosophy and Politics and several art colleges. Munich is home to the Max Planck Society with Max Planck Institutes for Foreign and International Patent, Copyright and Competition Law, for Physics, for Psychiatry, for foreign and International Social Law and for psychological Research and the Goethe Institute as well as the German Academy for Urban and Regional Planning. Federal authorities and institutions are also located in Munich, such as the German and European Patent Offices, the Federal Patent Court and the Federal Fiscal Court.
