Montpellier is one of the most liveable cities in France and attracts visitors with a unique offer of culture, cuisine and history. The beach is also not far away…

Which part of France is Montpellier?
Montpellier in the south of France has developed over the years into a city that can compete with international metropolises. It is not for nothing that in 2010 the New York Times ranked it among the 45 most interesting cities in the world. Montpellier owes this not least to its versatility. Here, the Mediterranean way of life is combined with a wide range of cultural activities, historic magnificent buildings meet the most modern architecture and it is only 10 km from the vibrant city to the Mediterranean coast.
Montpellier is not only one of the largest cities on the French Mediterranean coast, but also an important student city: the University of Montpellier is the fourth largest in the country, along with the universities of Paris, Toulouse and Aix-en-Provence, every fourth resident of the city is an enrolled student.
With over 250,000 inhabitants, Montpellier is the capital and by far the largest city in the Languedoc-Roussilion region; after Marseille, it is even the second largest French metropolis on the Mediterranean. This was not always the case, because this city is one of the very few non-ancient foundations. The place is first mentioned in a document when a count (Bernard de Megueil) lived there in the 10th century. In the XVII century, land was overwritten and a castle with a chapel was built.Very conveniently located in terms of trade, but not clearly assigned to any dominion (owned by the kings of Aragon between 1213 – 1349), the rise of the city began in the 13th century, when a hodgepodge of Muslims, Jews and free spirits (later Protestants) had found a home there in terms of settlement and trade. The city law of 1204, the emerging station of the Way of St. James at that time and, above all, the emerging medical school, which was unique in knowledge and teaching beyond the Arab world, contributed to the rise of the city to our days. Almost a third of the inhabitants are students today.
