Monrovia, the capital of Liberia
Liberia’s capital Monrovia is located on the Atlantic coast. The city was founded in 1560 as a trading post by the Portuguese and has developed into an important hub for maritime transport since the 19th century. In 1821, the first freed slaves from America arrived in the port of Monrovia. They were descendants of the once enslaved Africans who had been deported to the New World by European traders centuries earlier. They renamed the city Monrovia a year later, in honor of the American President James Monroe, who supported the settlement of former slaves in Africa.
The new settlers built the roads on the American model. In the center, the roads are asphalted, but the suburban roads are simple slopes. Today, more than 1.7 million people live in Monrovia. The city is known for the large Waterside Market. The heart of the city beats in the port of Monrovia. The Freeport Monrovia is the most important seaport in the country with large, modern port facilities. It is located on the western shore of the former Bushrod Island.
Due to the influx of the young rural population and refugees, many slums have been created around Monrovia, they are called Shanty towns. The largest is the centrally located Westpoint in Monrovia. The water problems are big. Fresh water must be fetched from wells. Or people collect rainwater, which is often contaminated. That’s why there are always news about cholera sufferers in the slums. The sanitary facilities are also in poor condition. Much was destroyed by the last Civil War. That’s why people here say: “It’s easy to destroy something, but it’s hard to build something.” Since 2008, the government has been trying to improve living conditions in the densely populated slums.
