Where in the USA is Minnesota located?
Minnesota is the 32nd state of the United States of America. The twelfth largest US state by area is located in the north of the country on the border with Canada. It was created in 1858 from the eastern part of the Minnesota Territory and a small part of the Wisconsin Territory.
More than half of Minnesota’s population lives in the Minneapolis–Saint Paul metropolitan area (Twin Cities), with Minneapolis being the most populous city in the state with just under 383,000 inhabitants. But St. Paul – as the second largest city with about 285,000 inhabitants – is the capital. Some large, internationally active companies have their headquarters in the twin cities. Furthermore, the largest shopping center in the USA, the Mall of America, is also located in that metropolitan area, namely in the city of Bloomington.
Minnesota bears – derived from its state motto (“L’Étoile du Nord”, fr. for “star of the North”– – the epithet North Star State (Engl. “Northern Star State”). Another nickname of the state is The Gopher State. In Minnesota in particular, the gopher is called the thirteen-striped squirrel, which was widely used there, which at first was only the namesake and mascot of the sports teams of the University of Minnesota (“Golden Gophers”) and only later became the name for the whole state. Despite two legislative initiatives, the chipmunk did not become the official heraldic animal of Minnesota. Because of its many lakes, Minnesota is also called the “land of ten thousand lakes”.
Minnesota is the northernmost state of the USA after Alaska, the Northwest Angle is the only part of the 48 contiguous states that extends north beyond the 49th degree of latitude. The northeast of the state is located on the shore of the Upper Lake and shares maritime borders with the Canadian province of Ontario, as well as the states of Michigan and Wisconsin. It is bordered by Wisconsin to the east and southeast of Minnesota, Iowa to the south, North and South Dakota to the west, and the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Manitoba to the north. With 225,171 square kilometers (about 2.25 percent of the total area), Minnesota is the twelfth largest state in the United States and the second largest in the Midwest. The extension in the north-south direction is about 660 kilometers, in the east-west direction about 560 kilometers.
