More than half of Minnesota’s population lives in the Minneapolis–Saint Paul metropolitan area (Twin Cities), with Minneapolis being the most populous city in the state with just under 383,000 inhabitants. But St. Paul – as the second largest city with about 285,000 inhabitants – is the capital. Some large, internationally active companies have their headquarters in the twin cities. Furthermore, the largest shopping center in the USA, the Mall of America, is also located in that metropolitan area, namely in the city of Bloomington.

Minnesota bears – derived from its state motto (“L’Étoile du Nord”, fr. for “star of the North”– – the epithet North Star State (Engl. “Northern Star State”). Another nickname of the state is The Gopher State. In Minnesota in particular, the gopher is called the thirteen-striped squirrel, which was widely used there, which at first was only the namesake and mascot of the sports teams of the University of Minnesota (“Golden Gophers”) and only later became the name for the whole state. Despite two legislative initiatives, the chipmunk did not become the official heraldic animal of Minnesota. Because of its many lakes, Minnesota is also called the “land of ten thousand lakes”.
