Milan has been around for more than 2000 years. Already in the time of the Romans it was an important city. At that time it was called Mediolanum. After the collapse of the Roman Empire, the city belonged to the Frankish Empire and the Holy Roman Empire. For a while, Milan was even an independent city-state ruled by noble families. Later he was dependent on France, sometimes on the Habsburgs. Since 1861, Milan was part of the Kingdom of Italy.

Milan’s history can be traced back almost 2500 years and begins with the settlement by the Insubrians, a Celtic tribe who founded the settlement Mediolanum here around 400 BC. About 180 years later, the area was conquered by the Romans and enjoyed constant growth and influence in the empire, which eventually even led to the fact that the city was temporarily named the capital of the Western Roman Empire in 293. For Christianity, the city also stands as an important landmark within the framework of the tolerance of their religion, since the Edict of Tolerance was promulgated here in 313, which ensured freedom of belief in the future. During the last years of the Empire, Milan was besieged and conquered first by the Visigoths and then by the Huns, before the Ostrogoths completely destroyed the city in 539. In the next decades, the place was painstakingly rebuilt again, but then fell first to the Lombards and finally to the Frankish Empire.
