Where is Memphis located in the state?
Memphis on the Mississippi River in southwestern Tennessee is located at the tri-state corner of Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi. The city is associated with two very different icons of US history: the civil rights activist Dr. Martin Luther King and the actor and singer Elvis Presley. Since the early 20th century, the city has been synonymous with music – as the birthplace of blues-derived rock’n’roll, it celebrates its musical heritage in numerous clubs, pubs and on the street.

The festivities in Memphis are also always about music: the highlight is Elvis’ birthday on January 8th and the festival “Memphis in May” – where a whole month is celebrated with concerts and BBQs. Also in May, the awarding of the W.C. Handy Prize – the Blues answer to the Grammys as well as the Elvis week “Tribute Week” will take place around August 16th. Around Labour Day, the Music & Heritage Festival is celebrated here.
Memphis is located above a steep bank (Engl.: bluff) in the southwestern corner of the state of Tennessee, separated from the state of Arkansas only by the Mississippi River and a few kilometers from the border with the state of Mississippi. As almost everywhere in the Mississippi Delta, you will encounter the typical charm and traditional hospitality of the American Southern states at every turn. No matter which of the numerous attractions you visit: in Memphis you will be greeted as warmly as if you were part of the family.
Memphis is not only the cradle of rock’n’roll and the nursery of the blues, but has also played a significant role in the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s. This legacy is omnipresent – from Graceland, the estate of Elvis Presley with the final resting place of the “King”, to the National Civil Rights Museum, located on the site where Martin Luther King Jr. was shot. Between the unique sights and landmarks that give the “Bluff City” its distinctive character, there are residential and business districts with restored historical buildings.
