The island state of Mauritius is located in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar and about 2,400 kilometers off the east coast of Africa. Just above the Tropic of Capricorn, the island is located in the southern hemisphere.

The national territory also includes the island of Rodrigues, which is located about 600 kilometers off the east coast of Mauritius. The protected area of the republic includes two more islands, Agaléna and St. Brandon. For the sake of simplicity, however, in this travel guide, when mentioning Mauritius, only the main island is meant.
