The north-west borders on Western Sahara (see Morocco). In the northeast there is a short border with Algeria. The entire east borders Mali with an angle drawn as with the ruler. To the southwest is Senegal. Mauritania is about three times the size of Germany, but only three million people live here – with us it’s 82 million!

Two thirds of the country lies in the desert, the Sahara. A third, the south, is in the Sahel. Only in the very south, on the borders with Senegal and Mali, there is a strip of land in the river valley of Senegal, which is more humid. The fact that it is a little greener here than in the rest of the country is also clearly visible on the satellite image.

In the center of the country is a plateau from 300 to 500 meters in height. There are sandstone plains and individual mountains that protrude from it. This also includes the Kediet Ijill, the highest mountain in the country with 915 meters. Lowlands join both to the west and to the east. Sand dunes are part of the typical picture in these regions.
