Mali is located in West Africa. Mali borders Algeria to the northeast. Further borders exist in the east to Niger, in the south to Burkina Faso and the Ivory Coast, in the west to Guinea, Senegal and Mauritania. Mali has no access to the sea, it is a landlocked country.
What country does Mali belong to?
The land is flat. There are extensive plains. Sometimes rock massifs suddenly protrude from these plains, such as the rocks of Bandiagara.
Mali is located in the Sahara and in the Sahel. The Sahara is the vast desert that occupies the entire north of Africa. A third of Mali, the entire north, is located in the Sahara Desert. Another third, the center of the country, is located in the Sahel. This forms the transition from the Sahara to the savannah. The Sahel is very dry. There are often droughts and therefore severe famines for the people living here. Another problem is that the desert is moving south. Timbuktu, for example, suffers from severe drought and desertification at the transition from the Sahara to the Sahel.
