Mainz is the capital of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate and is located directly opposite the mouth of the Main River on the Rhine. The city has a long history and numerous wars and invasions have shaped the city. Excavations at the beginning of the 20th century indicate a settlement as early as 20,000 – 25,000 years ago. In the 8th century, Mainz was elevated to the status of an archbishopric and with the construction of the Mainz Cathedral in the years 975 – 1011 AD, the city developed into one of the largest ecclesiastical provinces in southern Germany. Mainz is today known as a cathedral city with the bishopric and a stronghold of the Rhenish Carnival. In addition, Mainz is the home of book printing. Johannes Gutenberg (around 1400-1468) once invented the printing press here. A stroll through the old town between Ludwigstraße and Große Bleiche is worthwhile – as is a walk along the Rhine promenade during a city break to Mainz.
