The city has about 560,000 inhabitants. With a population density of over 19,500 inhabitants per km2, the city is one of the most densely populated areas in the world. Originally, Macao consisted of three islands. By land filling, 2 islands were merged and the island of Macao was connected to the mainland, so that it is much easier to reach than at that time.

Similarly, how is Macau so rich?

Tourism is the backbone of Macau’s economy, and much of it was focused on gambling, which was legalized in the 19th century and has been the hub of the economy and an important source of income for the government ever since.

Why did Portugal give up Macau? Army officers in 1974 overthrew Portugal’s dictatorship, and then – wanted to abandon all the old colonies of the country. But China was in no hurry to take responsibility for the aging, unprofitable Macau again. It was only after Beijing had determined its plan for Hong Kong that it accepted Portugal’s offer.

Is Macau richer than Las Vegas?

Last year the casinos in Macau gambled in 6.5 billion dollars and passed the five times as big Las Vegas with ten times more hotel rooms. Macau claims the historic edge; gambling began in 1847 in a former Portuguese colony, which celebrated its 450th anniversary that year.

Just under an hour by boat from Hong Kong is Macau, a former European colony on Chinese soil. It used to be a port of call for rich merchants and escaped soldiers – today millions of tourists come to the casinos that are banned in Hong Kong and China.

As small and insignificant as Macau may seem in contrast to Hong Kong, the island has a much longer European past than the neighboring island of superlatives.

Already in 1513, the first European enters Macau with the Portuguese navigator Jorge Alvarez. At this time, the Portuguese dominate the world’s oceans east of Africa, while the Spaniards are oriented more to the west to South America.

The Portuguese sailors would like to trade with the rich China, but encounter resistance in the Middle Kingdom. The Chinese emperors have little interest in any outside influences and prefer to isolate their empire.

The history of Macao dates back to the 12th century. In the 16th century, the Portuguese landed in Macao and received permission from the Chinese Empire to set up an administrative and trading post. The Portuguese converted the former fishing village into an important port city, which was somewhat different from what was known from Chinese culture.

However, the affiliation to China was still preserved. In the heyday of the city, many magnificent colonial buildings were built, which can still be visited today and offer an exciting insight into China’s culture, as they are different from what one would expect within China.
