Where is Macau located? Macau, officially known as the Macau Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China, is the most densely populated region in the world. It is located in the western Pearl River Delta along the coast of the South China Sea in Southeast Asia. Hong Kong is located east of Macau.

The history of Macao dates back to the 12th century. In the 16th century, the Portuguese landed in Macao and received permission from the Chinese Empire to set up an administrative and trading post. The Portuguese converted the former fishing village into an important port city, which was somewhat different from what was known from Chinese culture.
However, the affiliation to China was still preserved. In the heyday of the city, many magnificent colonial buildings were built, which can still be visited today and offer an exciting insight into China’s culture, as they are different from what one would expect within China.
