Since the award as European Capital of Culture in 2004, the ornate facades of the Flemish buildings along the picturesque cobblestone alleys and large squares of the old town have been lovingly restored. It is best to start your city walk at the “great square”, the Grand’Place.

THE GRAND’PLACE, THE HEART OF LILLE
The Grand’Place is also called Place du Général de Gaulle. Because what few people know: the future president of France was born here in 1890. Then as now, the square is the heart of the city. Already in the 17th century there was a lively trade here, about which the magnificent Old Stock Exchange (Vieille Bourse) still tells today. By the way, the second important square of the city is located right behind the Grand’Place: the Place du Théâtre with the opera and the Chamber of Commerce “Chambre de Commerce”, which has been complementing the Old Stock Exchange since the 20th century.
