The capital of Gabon is Libreville, a port city on the Gulf of Guinea. It was founded in 1849 as a settlement for freed slaves, following the example of Freetown. Hence the name, which in German means “city of the Free”. With around 540,000 inhabitants, Libreville is also the largest city in the country.



One of the highlights of the cozy city is the artists’ village Village des Artisans, which attracts art lovers from all over the world. The lively Bouet Market also attracts many visitors, especially on weekends. In the National Museum in Libreville you will find sculptures and wood carvings of the catch. They are so famous that Picasso has already been inspired by their forms. The districts of Akebe and Nombakele, the harbour and the Cathedral of St. Michael’s also invite you to discover.
