THE MODERN ARCHITECTURAL CITY BY THE SEA
Founded by King Francis I in 1517 to defend the coast, the city quickly left its military purpose behind. In the 19th century, it developed into an important trading centre thanks to its transatlantic port. A lively trade in raw materials such as cotton, coffee, spices and tropical woods was carried out here. The Reeder-Haus testifies to this high phase. In addition, the port recorded a large volume of passengers on the Atlantic routes. The city is still the second largest port in France today. The cityscape was shaped by important architects of our era: Bellarmato, Thibault, Lamandé, Perret, Niemeyer, Reichen & Robert and of course Jean Nouvel, the Pritzker Prize winner (most important international architecture award).
