In the 8th century, Kyoto became the second capital of Japan under the name Heian-Kyo. Until the 19th century, the city was the residence of the royal court. The real rulers of Japan were the Shoguns. While the powerless Japanese emperor resided in Kyoto until 1868, the shogunate was finally moved from Kyoto to the east coast with the beginning of the Edo era in 1603 and the city of Edo was founded.

In the 19th century, the Edo Shogunate lost power and had to bow to the progressive forces of the country. In 1868, the power of the shoguns was finally over. The Japanese emperor moved his residence to Edo. The city of Edo was renamed Tokyo and received the status of a capital, which it ultimately still is today.
